Krakow Travel Guide — Common Questions
Is Krakow worth visiting?
Yes — Krakow is one of the most rewarding city breaks in Central Europe. The Old Town is UNESCO-listed and almost entirely pedestrianised. The city has a thriving food and culture scene, outstanding day trip options (Auschwitz, Wieliczka, Zakopane), and remains significantly more affordable than Western European capitals. Most visitors say they wished they had stayed longer.
How many days do you need in Krakow?
Three days comfortably covers the Old Town, Kazimierz, and a full day at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Four or five days adds Wieliczka Salt Mine and a Zakopane or thermal baths day. Two days works as a fast-paced city break but means choosing between day trips. The free guide includes sample itineraries for 2, 3 and 5 days.
Is Krakow expensive?
Krakow is one of the most affordable major cities in Europe. Meals in local restaurants cost a fraction of what you would pay in London, Paris or Amsterdam. Accommodation, transport and attractions are all significantly cheaper than Western European equivalents. Budget travellers can get by comfortably on €50–60 per day including accommodation.
What is the best time to visit Krakow?
May, June, September and October are the best months — warm weather, fewer crowds than July and August, and long daylight hours. Winter (November–March) is cold but atmospheric, with Christmas markets in December and excellent thermal baths weather. Summer is busy but fully enjoyable. The free guide includes a full month-by-month breakdown.
Is Krakow safe at night?
Yes — Krakow is generally a safe city. The Old Town and Kazimierz are busy with tourists and locals well into the evening. Standard urban precautions apply (watch your belongings in crowded areas, be aware in nightlife zones late at night). The free guide covers practical safety tips and areas to be aware of.
What currency does Krakow use?
Krakow uses the Polish złoty (PLN). Poland is not in the eurozone — euros are not accepted in most shops, restaurants or attractions. ATMs are widely available throughout the city centre. The free guide includes practical money tips including the best ways to get cash and avoid poor exchange rates.
