Unique Day Trips from Krakow
Zalipie · Ogrodzieniec Castle · Ojcow National Park · Częstochowa · Off the beaten track
Most visitors to Krakow follow the same three-stop itinerary: Auschwitz, Wieliczka, Zakopane. All three are outstanding — but southern Poland has far more to offer, and the things to do near Krakow that most travellers never discover are often the most memorable.
Within 90 minutes of the city: a village where every house has been painted with flowers for over a century. A 14th-century castle ruin chosen by Netflix as the filming location for The Witcher. A limestone gorge with a 700-year-old castle perched above it. The Black Madonna of Częstochowa — the most visited pilgrimage site in Poland. And the footsteps of a Pope who shaped the 20th century.
We offer private and small-group day trips from Krakow to all of these destinations — with transport included, English-speaking guides or detailed guidebooks, and fixed
departure times that don't change at the last minute.
Things to Do Near Krakow — Beyond the Obvious
Zalipie — Poland's Painted Village
Zalipie is one of the most visually striking villages in Central Europe — and almost entirely unknown outside Poland. Since the late 19th century, the women of Zalipie have painted every surface they can find: house walls, fences, wells, dog kennels, bridges. Flowers in every colour, in every style, on every building.
The tradition began as a way of covering smoke stains on cottage walls. It became an art form. Today Zalipie is home to the Malowana Chata — the Painted Cottage — a living museum of the tradition, and the annual Painted Cottage competition draws artists from across the region each year.
Located 90 kilometres northeast of Krakow, Zalipie is a half-day destination best visited as a private day trip — public transport connections are poor, and the village rewards slow exploration on foot.
Ogrodzieniec Castle — The Witcher Filming Location
Sixty kilometres north of Krakow, on the highest limestone peak of the Kraków–Częstochowa Upland, stand the ruins of a 14th-century royal fortress. Built by Casimir the Great and later known as "the little Wawel", Ogrodzieniec was one of the most opulent castles in medieval Poland before the Swedish army burned it in 1655.
In 2019, Netflix chose it as the filming location for the Battle of Sodden Hill in The Witcher Season 1 — because no set designer could build something that looks this old.
The ruins cover 3.5 hectares of limestone rock, with towers, secret vaults and panoramic Jura views still intact.
One of the most dramatic castles near Krakow, and one of the least visited by international tourists.
Ojcow National Park & Pieskowa Skała Castle
Poland's smallest national park sits 25 kilometres north of Krakow — a limestone gorge carved by the Prądnik River, with rock formations, caves, and a Renaissance castle perched improbably above the valley. Pieskowa Skała Castle is one of the best-preserved Renaissance residences in Poland, built on a limestone cliff with views across the gorge below.
The park is also home to the Hercules Club — a 25-metre limestone pillar standing alone in the valley — and Łokietek Cave, one of the largest bat colonies in Central Europe. Accessible as a half-day trip from Krakow.
Częstochowa — The Black Madonna
The Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa is the most visited pilgrimage destination in Poland — home to the Black Madonna, a 14th-century icon venerated by millions of Catholics worldwide. Over four million pilgrims visit each year, many completing the journey on foot from Krakow.
Located 120 kilometres northwest of Krakow, Częstochowa is a full-day destination. The monastery complex includes the Chapel of Our Lady, the Treasury, the Arsenal, and 360-degree views from the Jasna Góra tower across the surrounding plain.
In the Footsteps of John Paul II
Karol Wojtyła — Pope John Paul II — was born in Wadowice, 50 kilometres from Krakow, and spent his formative years in the city before leaving for Rome in 1978. A half-day tour from Krakow covers the key sites of his life: the Wawel Cathedral where he was ordained, the Archbishop's Palace where he lived, the Łagiewniki Sanctuary he consecrated in 2002, and the family home in Wadowice where it all began.

Is Ogrodzieniec Castle really where The Witcher was filmed?
Yes. The Battle of Sodden Hill in The Witcher Season 1 on Netflix was filmed at Ogrodzieniec Castle, 60 kilometres north of Krakow. The ruins cover 3.5 hectares and include towers, courtyards and panoramic views across the Polish Jura. It is one of the most atmospheric castles near Krakow.
How far is Ojcow National Park from Krakow?

gorges, caves and Pieskowa Skała Castle above the valley.
