Wrocław
Scenic boat tours, Gothic architecture and the city of a thousand dwarfs — just a short trip from Krakow.
Wrocław is one of Poland's most rewarding city break destinations — a place of Gothic cathedrals, colourful baroque townhouses, a river split into a dozen channels, and over 400 tiny bronze gnomes hidden across the city. Located in southwest Poland, Wrocław is easily reachable from Kraków by train (approximately 2.5 hours) and makes an outstanding day trip or short break.
Krakow Planner partners with Party Wave to offer river cruises on the Odra and electric car city tours — two of the best ways to experience Wrocław.
Things to Do in Wrocław
Odra River Cruise
See Wrocław from the water — one of the most atmospheric ways to experience the city. Party Wave operates 45-minute river cruises along the Odra, passing under historic bridges, alongside Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) and through the heart of the Old Town. Boats depart daily with audio commentary available in multiple languages. The Spring River Cruise and Historical River Cruise with archival photos are particularly popular options.
Electric Car City Tour
Wrocław's Old Town is compact and best explored slowly — and a Melex electric car tour is one of the most enjoyable ways to do it. Your driver takes you through the Market Square, past the Cathedral, along the riverside and through the city's most photogenic streets, with audio guide commentary and historic photos along the way. Comfortable, quiet and zero-emission — ideal for families, couples and anyone who wants the highlights without the walking.
The Market Square & Old Town
Wrocław's Rynek — the Market Square — is one of the most beautiful in Poland. Surrounded by colourful Renaissance and Gothic townhouses, it rivals Kraków's Rynek Główny in scale and atmosphere. The Town Hall, standing in the centre of the square, dates to the 13th century. Surrounding streets are lined with cafés, restaurants and amber shops.
Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski)
The oldest part of Wrocław — a small island at the confluence of the Odra channels, dominated by the twin-spired Cathedral of St John the Baptist. In the evenings, Ostrów Tumski is lit by gas lamps — one of the last places in Poland still using them. A short walk from the Market Square and best viewed from the river.
The Gnomes of Wrocław
Wrocław has over 400 bronze gnome figurines (krasnale) hidden across the city — on doorsteps, drainpipes, bridges and street corners. Each has its own character and name. Finding them has become one of the city's most popular activities for visitors of all ages. The tourist office sells a gnome map; alternatively, simply keep your eyes at ankle height as you walk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Wrocław worth visiting?
Yes — Wrocław is one of the most underrated cities in Central Europe. The Old Town is beautiful, the river setting is unique, and the city has a genuine local character that larger tourist destinations often lack. It works well as a day trip from Kraków or as a 2–3 day city break in its own right.
How far is Wrocław from Kraków?
Wrocław is approximately 270 km from Kraków — about 2.5 hours by direct train or 3 hours by car. Regular trains run throughout the day from Kraków Główny to Wrocław Główny.
Is Wrocław expensive?
No — Wrocław is one of the most affordable cities in Poland. Meals, accommodation and activities are significantly cheaper than Western European equivalents. Beer is inexpensive, restaurants are excellent value, and most attractions are free or low-cost.
Is Wrocław safe?
Yes — Wrocław is a safe city for tourists. The Old Town and riverside areas are busy with locals and visitors throughout the day and evening. Standard urban precautions apply. ### What is the best time to visit Wrocław? May to September is ideal — warm weather, outdoor terraces on the Rynek, and river cruises in full swing. December brings one of Poland's best Christmas markets. The city is worth visiting year-round.
How long do you need in Wrocław?
Two days comfortably covers the Old Town, Cathedral Island, a river cruise and a Melex city tour. One day is possible as a fast-paced day trip — prioritise the Market Square, Ostrów Tumski and a river cruise.
