Ogrodzieniec Castle — The Witcher Filming Location Near Krakow
If you are looking for things to do near Krakow that go beyond the standard itinerary, Ogrodzieniec Castle is the answer. Sixty kilometres north of the city, on the highest limestone peak of the Kraków–Częstochowa Upland, stand the ruins of a 14th-century royal fortress that Netflix chose as the filming location for the Battle of Sodden Hill in The Witcher Season 1.
No CGI. No set dressing. Just seven centuries of real history on a limestone cliff — and one of the most striking castle ruins in Central Europe.
The Castle
Built by Casimir the Great around 1350, Ogrodzieniec reached its peak under the Boner family in the 16th century — earning the name "the little Wawel" for its scale and ambition. A 100-metre-deep well. Jousting courtyards spanning 3.5 hectares. Banqueting halls, a private library, and secret vaults beneath the lord's bedroom that were never found.
Then came the Swedish Deluge of 1655. The castle was stormed, burned and eventually abandoned in 1810 — left to the wind and limestone until its ruins became so hauntingly photogenic that filmmakers couldn't resist. Iron Maiden filmed here. Andrzej Wajda shot Revenge within these walls. And in 2019, Netflix chose it above every other castle in Poland.
Exploring the Ruins
This castle tour from Krakow is self-guided — Ogrodzieniec does not offer live guide services on-site. Instead, your English-language guidebook (included, yours to keep) takes you room by room through the Torture Chamber, Smoke Kitchen, Boner's Bedroom, Credence Tower, Knight's Chamber, and Chicken Leg Tower — explaining what happened in each space and who was responsible.
You set the pace. Nobody is rushing you.
The route reaches its highest point at the Credence Tower — open to visitors, with panoramic views across the Jura landscape that explain why this location has been used as a dramatic backdrop for decades.
