Nowa Huta – A Journey into the Socialist Era
Private round-trip transfer from Krakow to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. Door-to-door service from your hotel or apartment, timed to your museum entry slot.
Nowa Huta – the “ideal city” is a journey back to the time when a new model socialist city was being built on the eastern outskirts of Kraków, beyond its historic center. During the tour, we will explore unique socialist-realist architecture, wide avenues, monumental squares, and buildings meant to embody the power of the new system.
We will see Central Square, monumental housing estates, and places where Nowa Huta’s residents fought for freedom and religion – such as the famous Lord’s Ark church (Arka Pana). We will also uncover local secrets, such as why there is still an area in Nowa Huta called “Mexico” and what this unusual name reveals about the district’s past.
We will learn what everyday life was like under communism – full of contrasts, humor, and hardships. To get a real feel of the era, we will also play games that children used to enjoy in the communist period.
