What You'll See

Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial — guided tour from Krakow

Auschwitz-Birkenau — the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp, now a UNESCO World Heritage Memorial.

At Auschwitz I you visit the original camp buildings housing permanent exhibitions on the history of the Holocaust. You pass through the "Arbeit macht frei" gate, see the Death Wall, and enter the preserved gas chamber and crematorium — all guided by a licensed local expert.

At Auschwitz II-Birkenau you walk the vast grounds of the largest extermination site in history — the ruins of gas chambers, the remains of hundreds of prisoner barracks, the railway ramp where selections took place, and the national memorials erected by survivors and their descendants.

At the Wieliczka Salt Mine the mood shifts completely. You descend 380 steps to Level 1, 64 metres underground, and walk 3.5 kilometres through 20 chambers carved from rock salt over seven centuries. The centrepiece is the Chapel of the Blessed Kinga — a fully functioning church carved entirely from salt, 101 metres below the surface, with chandeliers, an altar, and bas-relief carvings all made from the same mineral.
